Newspaper executives who were at the heart of Rupert Murdoch’s tabloid empire went on trial at the Old Bailey in London yesterday as it emerged that three of their former colleagues had pleaded guilty to phone hacking offences.
The prosecution alleged that News of the World executives including Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson “must have known” about phone hacking at the defunct newspaper.
Andrew Edis QC told the jury that overseeing a weekly publication was not like reading War and Peace and it should not have been too much trouble for an editor to take an interest in all the content.
