China brings Britain out from the cold as relations thaw

China’s official media mouthpiece has indicated Britain is no longer in a “diplomatic deep freeze” with Beijing, after the UK government gave assurances this week that it does not want to see an independent Tibet.

In a sign that a year of difficulty is ending, the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist party, wrote: “Sino-UK relations have taken a step forward,” indicating this is “a good thing”.

London and Beijing also confirmed this week that UK prime minister David Cameron will hold a summit with Li Keqiang, the Chinese premier, in the second half of this year, ending a period of more than 12 months that has seen no contact at the top government level.
