New Delhi protests to China over troops’ border incursion

India has complained that a Chinese military patrol crossed the disputed Himalayan border between the two countries last week and is encamped several kilometres inside territory normally controlled by India.

Incursions across the 4,000km “line of actual control” (LAC) are common – New Delhi has recorded hundreds of such incidents involving the People’s Liberation Army in the past three years – but soldiers rarely stay long and disputes are usually resolved quickly.

The Indian government, however, is taking a serious view of what it regards as a violation of normal practice. It occurred ahead of a planned visit to India and Pakistan next month by Li Keqiang, Chinese premier.
