BlackBerry has gambled its future on an ambitious charge into the smartphone market with a direct challenge to the global dominance of industry leaders such as Apple and Samsung.
Shares in the struggling Canadian handset maker, which has changed its name from Research In Motion to BlackBerry after its branded phones, slid even as it began its make-or-break turnround bid yesterday.
The company, which has initially launched two touchscreen smartphones using the new BlackBerry 10 software, is planning a range of other phones and devices that will play on the group’s heritage of its well-thumbed mini keyboards.
