Beijing smog cloud has silver lining

Flights have been cancelled, traffic disrupted and hospital wards filled with patients, but one part of the Chinese economy is benefiting from Beijing’s toxic air pollution.

Sellers of air purifiers and face masks sold out of many of their most popular products this week as the Chinese capital was smothered in a cloud of hazardous, choking smog for the fourth time in less than a month.

Executives and sales agents for these companies estimate that sales of air-purifying machines have more than tripled over the past month as northern China has been hit by air pollution emergencies.
