South Korea has gained US approval to more than double the range of its ballistic missiles facing North Korea, a move that is likely to stoke tensions on the peninsula.
Under an agreement unveiled yesterday, the maximum range of South Korean missiles will be increased from 300km to 800km. The change will enable South Korea to attack a wider range of targets in the North and to establish missile bases further from the border. The payload for South Korean unmanned aircraft was also increased from 500kg to 2,500kg.
The US has guaranteed South Korea’s security since the Korean war and has nearly 30,000 troops stationed in the country. As part of that arrangement, Seoul agreed to seek US consent for big increases in its military powers.
