EU antitrust authorities have opened a formal investigation into suspected market abuses by Gazproma year after they raided the Russian energy company’s offices in central and eastern Europe.
The European Commission’s probe is focusing on whether state-owned Gazprom used its dominant position in the EU gas market to thwart competitors and push up prices in central and eastern Europe.
“Such behaviour, if established, may constitute a restriction of competition and lead to higher prices and deterioration of security of supply,” the commission said in a statement released yesterday evening. A Gazprom spokesman said the EU had not informed the company of the announcement and declined to comment further.
