UK left with little option for funds to build nuclear plants

The negotiations concerning the sale of the UK’s Horizon nuclear project to a Chinese-backed consortium are not the first time Britain has turned east to help keep the lights on.

The London Olympics were partly powered by electricity distribution networks owned since 2010 by the investment vehicle CKI, which is controlled by Li Ka-shing, the Hong Kong billionaire.

Chinese investment in the UK has grown sharply in recent years, with deals in the water and electricity markets as well as North Sea oil and gas.
