Tang presses bid for HK leadership

Henry Tang, Beijing’s favoured candidate in the election next month to be Hong Kong’s chief executive, formally filed his nomination papers yesterday, despite damaging revelations last week about the illegal construction of a 2,250 sq ft basement in a mansion owned by his wife.

Front page coverage in Hong Kong’s weekend newspapers alleged that the lavish complex included a wine cellar and an entertainment den, prompting speculation that Mr Tang had no option but to quit.

In a poll published by the South China Morning Post on Sunday, more than half the respondents thought Mr Tang should withdraw from the election, which takes place on March 25.
