WTO updates government procurement agreement

Governments of some of the world’s largest economies agreed on Thursday to open yet further their public procurement markets to each other’s companies, an agreement that could provide a model for future trade deals.

Ministers meeting at the World Trade Organisation in Geneva announced that they had updated the government procurement agreement (GPA), a pact between 42 member countries, overcoming last-minute tussles between the EU and Japan.

But a fresh bid from China to join the pact met a cool welcome from the US, which said it did not cover enough of China’s huge and complex array of state agencies and regional and local governments.
