Samsung plans first chip plant in China

Samsung Electronics plans to build its first chip factory in China to meet the country’s growing demand for smartphones and tablet computers as consumer demand remains weak in Europe and the US.

Samsung, the world’s largest technology company by sales, is seeking regulatory approval for the plant, which will make Nand flash-memory chips for Samsung products and supply fast-growing Chinese phone manufacturers.

China overtook the US as the world’s biggest smartphone market in the third quarter of this year, according to Strategy Analytics, the research firm.
