Wedding’s legacy likely to be less golden

“A chance to escape from austerity, even if only for a day”, was how an observer has described the Queen’s matrimonials in 1947.

Her recession-battered subjects may feel the same way about the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton next Friday.

But while some point to the benefits of extra spending as the country unfurls the bunting and thousands of foreign sightseers check into London’s guesthouses, the bank holiday is more likely to be a drag on the economy than a respite from austerity.
