Emergency workers scramble to gain control of Fukushima plant

The situation at the Daiichi nuclear reactor at Fukushima continued to baffle nuclear experts and governments yesterday.

Emergency workers worked to regain control of the dangerously overheated nuclear complex yesterday, using all resources available to them. The concern focused in particular on overheating of the spent fuel rods.

This does not threaten a radiological catastrophe on the scale of Chernobyl, experts say, but could still cause grave local pollution. Critically, wind direction will determine where this could travel.
