Britain’s prime minister has been told he will need to slash by 88,000 the number of overseas students allowed into the UK each year by 2014 if he is to be sure of bringing annual net migration down to the “tens of thousands”.
The Migration Advisory Committee, an independent adviser to the UK government, said on Thursday that David Cameron should set out to reduce annual net migration by 146,000 over the next four years to make sure he hits his target immigration cap within the lifetime of this parliament.
It said 60 per cent of that reduction would need to come from student visas, which make up the bulk of non-European Union migration to the UK each year.
