Things improve, but judiciary still lacks independence

From physical infrastructure to market reform, China is modernising on all fronts at once.

But it is not just building highways and retooling market trading mechanisms. In the past few years, the country has adopted new or heavily rewritten laws in an astonishing array of areas covering economic relations: patents, employment, bankruptcy, competition and tax. The list goes on.

The number of legal disputes has exploded, especially in the employment area, and Chinese citizens are rapidly developing a taste for enforcing their economic rights in court or through arbitration.
