Exit polls make Tories largest party

David Cameron is on the threshold of 10 Downing St after an exit poll suggested the country had rejected Gordon Brown's government, but left the Conservatives short of a Commons majority.

The poll released at 10pm on Thursday predicted the Tories would win 307 seats, Labour 255 and Liberal Democrats 59, leaving Mr Cameron short of the winning post of 326 seats.

The market reaction to the prospect of a Tory in Number 10 was a fall in the value of sterling against the dollar from $1.4869 to $1.4736 in New York.
