Blow to record groups as Baidu is cleared of piracy charges

A Beijing court has cleared China's leading search engine of internet piracy charges, according to the international music industry trade body, in a setback for record companies' attempts to enforce intellectual property rights in the market with the largest internet population.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said it had received verdicts in a case against Baidu, China's largest online search company, and Sogou, a smaller one.

“The judgements in the Baidu and Sohu/Sogou cases are extremely disappointing, and we are considering our next steps,” the IFPI said.
