N Korea launch sparks fear of Asian arms race

North Korea's rocket launch over the weekend has sparked concerns about a new arms race in east Asia after South Korea suggested it might reconsider its commitment not to develop long-range missiles.

Han Seung-soo, South Korea's prime minister, told parliament the government would reconsider its adherence to the Missile Technology Control Regime, an informal international agreement to combat the proliferation of long-range nuclear missiles.

South Korea in 2001 became a member of the MTCR, which bars the export of technology for missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads over a range of more than 300km.
