Vote on pay by UK nurses raises prospect of first ever strike

Junior doctors prepare own ballot on industrial action after being excluded from public sector increases

NHS nurses across England and Wales will next month vote on whether to strike over pay, in what the Royal College of Nursing described as a “defining” moment for the sector.

The RCN union, which represents around 465,000 registered nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants in the UK, said it would recommend that its members vote in favour of strike action.

Voting will take place over four weeks from September 15. If members vote in favour, it will mark the first-ever industrial action held by RCN members in England and Wales.
