At least 46 people believed to be migrants to the US were found dead in and around an abandoned tractor trailer in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday evening, according to local city officials.
“This is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy,” San Antonio mayor Ron Nirenberg said at a press conference.
The local officials said another 16 people, including four children, were taken to hospital with signs of heat stroke and exhaustion. The trailer where the bodies were found was not air-conditioned, the officials said. Texas has been experiencing a record-breaking heatwave, and temperatures soared above 38C in San Antonio on Monday.
