Unilever and Sanofi pile on pressure over 2035 EU petrol ban

Cross-section of companies want to ‘ensure laggards don’t delay the market shift’

A cross-sector coalition of companies including Unilever, Zurich, Sanofi and Uber have urged the EU to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2035, piling pressure on the auto industry ahead of a crunch vote.

In a public letter to be sent to MEPs and ministers on Tuesday, the group says such a decision would “set in motion an urgently needed systemic transformation and make Europe a global leader in a key industry”.

The signatories add that while many carmakers have voluntarily committed to the phaseout of combustion engine models, “we need European decision makers to . . . ensure laggards don’t delay the market shift”.
