Biden says Putin cannot ‘remain in power’ as he warns of ‘long fight’

US president seeks to cement unity of western allies in response to Moscow’s war on Ukraine

US president Joe Biden said Vladimir Putin could not “remain in power” as he warned transatlantic democracies to steel themselves for a “long fight ahead” to protect freedom in Europe.

In a speech in Warsaw on Sunday, Biden appealed for Nato members to remain united in confronting Putin and defending Ukraine, comparing the struggle against Moscow’s aggression to the resistance against the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Speaking just over a month after Russia invaded Ukraine, the US president took on Putin directly, suggesting he now favoured his removal from office, in a shift from Washington’s stance so far.
