European stocks climb as traders await central banks’ response to inflation

Investors expect Fed to accelerate exit from bond-buying programme

European stocks rose on Tuesday ahead of a trio of central bank meetings in which policymakers will weigh up how to respond to both hot inflation and the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

The Europe-wide Stoxx 600 index gained 0.6 per cent in early dealings, with London’s FTSE 100 up 0.7 per cent and Frankfurt’s Dax increasing 0.5 per cent. Asian markets were broadly lower after a dip on Wall Street overnight.

Global stock markets in late November endured one of their most severe wobbles of 2021 when scientists in South Africa discovered a highly mutated coronavirus variant, since named Omicron.
