UK examines steps to stop children circumventing social media ban

Government considers putting age limits on virtual private networks to help enforce restrictions

Ministers are considering putting age limits on virtual private networks to stop children circumventing the forthcoming social media ban, as the UK’s regulator warned of serious practical problems checking users are over 16.

Sir Keir Starmer on Monday announced the UK would impose a ban on under-16s accessing social media sites. The restrictions, which seek to go further than a pioneering ban introduced in Australia, are due to come into force in early 2027.

Ofcom, the media regulator, on Tuesday warned the preferred means of several Big Tech companies to enforce Australia’s ban may not be effective.
