Bank of Japan governor Kazuo Ueda hospitalised

74-year-old set to miss next week’s meeting where central bank expected to raise interest rates to 1%

Kazuo Ueda, the governor of the Bank of Japan, has been hospitalised for treatment of a liver cyst infection ahead of a pivotal monetary policy meeting scheduled for next week.

In a statement on Wednesday, the central bank said Ueda’s medical treatment meant he would miss the two-day meeting on June 15 and 16. The bank said Ueda, 74, would remain in hospital for about two weeks for treatment.

Recent public comments by Ueda and others have led markets to expect that the BoJ will almost certainly raise interest rates to 1 per cent next week, which would be their highest level in 31 years.
