Mark Carney’s Liberals set to secure majority in Canadian parliament

Prime minister has also lured MPs from rival parties in recent months as he seeks to counter Trump’s threats

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to clinch a majority in Canada’s parliament after making gains in by-elections on Monday night, giving him a stronger mandate as he navigates volatile relations with Donald Trump.

Carney’s Liberal Party won two seats in Toronto, national broadcaster CBC News projected, while counting continued in a third race in Quebec.

The by-election gains put the Liberals in line for a narrow majority following a series of MPs crossing the floor. A strengthened mandate gives Carney greater political firepower to defend Canada’s economy against threats from the Trump administration.
