Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to clinch a majority in Canada’s parliament after making gains in by-elections on Monday night, giving him a stronger mandate as he navigates volatile relations with Donald Trump.
Carney’s Liberal Party won two seats in Toronto, national broadcaster CBC News projected, while counting continued in a third race in Quebec.
The by-election gains put the Liberals in line for a narrow majority following a series of MPs crossing the floor. A strengthened mandate gives Carney greater political firepower to defend Canada’s economy against threats from the Trump administration.
