It would be a “disaster” for Europe to prioritise building its own sovereign AI infrastructure ahead of boosting economic growth by deploying existing tools, the boss of Siemens has said.
The comments by Roland Busch, chief executive of the Munich-based group, come as the EU is seeking to cut dependency on US companies for office software, cloud infrastructure, AI and other services amid concern that Donald Trump’s foreign policy could lead to a “tech decoupling”.
Busch, who has run Siemens since 2021 and restyled the industrial conglomerate as a technology company, also told the FT that the EU risked being left further behind in the race to develop powerful AI tools if it did not simplify its regulations.
