TSMC has unveiled plans to produce 3-nanometre semiconductors in Japan, as the world’s largest chip manufacturer diversifies production of its cutting-edge chips.
Chief executive CC Wei met Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Thursday to announce the plans to produce the chip in Kumamoto at a fab operated by Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), which is majority owned by TSMC.
The 3nm chips are the most sophisticated semiconductors behind the 2nm variants that TSMC produces in Taiwan, which are vital for next-generation AI, autonomous driving and smartphones. Currently, the 3nm semiconductors are exclusively produced in Taiwan.
