Syria is considering auctioning a new mobile phone licence as part of the government’s ambitious plans to revamp its outdated telecommunications infrastructure.
The new provider will take over one of the two existing mobile operations including its network and subscribers, according to a communications ministry document seen by the FT.
Syria’s mobile network has for years been dominated by two operators, MTN and SyriaTel. The government has worked for months to resolve legal hurdles with both providers that prevented new operators from coming in, a person familiar with the situation said.
