Winter storms flood Gaza as population remains stuck in tents

UN estimates that 55,000  families have been affected by rain in enclave where reconstruction is a distant prospect

Winter storms have exacerbated the desperate humanitarian conditions in Gaza, aid groups have warned, as heavy rains have flooded the tents of displaced Palestinians and caused damaged buildings to collapse.

Parts of the Palestinian enclave, where nearly 900,000 people are currently living in flimsy tents, have in recent days been hit by biting winds and twice the average amount of rainfall for this time of year.

Amjad al-Shawa, director of the Palestinian NGO Network in Gaza, said the situation had been made worse by the fact that Israel had forced most of Gaza’s 2.2mn population into the low-lying areas of the strip near the coast, where they were being inundated by a combination of rainwater and sewage.
