Labour retreats on ‘day one’ rights for workers

Backbenchers accuse government of violating manifesto after it replaces immediate protection from unfair dismissal with six-month qualifying period

The UK government has submitted to business pressure to soften its workers’ rights legislation, abandoning a measure to give protection against unfair dismissal from day one, in a move fiercely attacked by some Labour MPs.

Several backbenchers accused the government of betraying its manifesto commitments after it said it would reduce the qualifying period for unfair dismissal protection from two years to six months — rather than, as previously promised, making it effective immediately.

The Department for Business and Trade said it was a “workable package” that would allow the government to move forward and ensure it could pass the employment rights bill more rapidly.
