Two National Guard troops shot near the White House in Washington

Police say a suspect is in custody after the incident

Two members of the National Guard have been shot near the White House in Washington and are “critically wounded”, President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post on Wednesday.

“The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price,” Trump wrote from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Trump deployed troops from the National Guard to Washington in August in a controversial move to use US military to crack down on crime and civil unrest on domestic soil.
