Gordon Singer, the London-based co-managing partner of US hedge fund Elliott Management, unsuccessfully tried to donate to Robert Jenrick during his failed run for the Conservative party leadership last November.
Singer’s donation of £1,499 — £1 below the reporting threshold for donations to members of parliament — was received on September 25 last year in the middle of the Conservative party’s leadership election. But it was deemed “impermissible” and returned to Singer. This was because Singer’s address was not up to date at the time, according to a person with knowledge of the donation.
The person familiar with the donation said Singer had made the donation because Jenrick’s wife, Michal Berkner, a partner at law firm Baker McKenzie, had asked him to do so.
