Syria starts trials of suspects accused in sectarian massacres

Members of security forces and Assad loyalists charged over March violence in which hundreds of civilians were killed

Syria began trials of suspects implicated in a wave of deadly sectarian violence this year, a first attempt by the country’s new authorities to deliver accountability after hundreds of civilians from the Alawite minority were killed.

The bloodshed marked the first major wave of sectarian violence after President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s Islamist rebels toppled former dictator Bashar al-Assad, who belongs to the Alawite sect, last December.

About 1,400 people, mainly civilians, were killed after government forces and their supporters clashed with Assad loyalists in March.
