Number of new foreign students in US falls by 17% over visa worries

Trump’s tough policies against universities lead to sharp fall in international enrolments

American universities have suffered one of the sharpest ever declines in foreign enrolments in the face of tough policies from President Donald Trump, with the number of new international students falling 17 per cent this year.

A survey of 825 US higher education institutions showed 57 per cent reported falling new enrolments by foreign students while only 29 per cent recorded any increase. The results raise concerns over the impact on universities of declining tuition revenue, along with the less tangible effect that having fewer foreign students will have on innovation and economic growth.
