Fears over Trump’s ‘retributive diplomacy’ at UN climate summit in Brazil

Delegates raise concerns that US gamesmanship in international policy will spillover to COP30

Fears that US President Donald Trump’s brand of “retributive diplomacy” would result in an attempt to disrupt the UN climate summit was hanging over preparations for COP30 starting in Brazil next week, delegates said.

Trump, who withdrew from the Paris agreement on his first day in office, did not plan to send any senior officials to the talks on “vague climate goals”, people close to the White House told the Financial Times.

But US representatives remain free to participate in the discussions in Belém, at the gateway to the Amazon rainforest.
