Syria’s president promises ‘reset’ in first meeting with Vladimir Putin

Kremlin talks signal easing of tensions after Ahmed al-Sharaa’s rebels toppled Assad regime

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met Vladimir Putin for the first time on Wednesday, signalling a possible rapprochement after Sharaa’s rebel forces toppled Putin’s longtime ally Bashar al-Assad last year.

Russia has sought to smooth things over with Sharaa’s new government in order to keep its strategically important air base and naval port in the country.
