UK toughens English language rules for immigrants

Visa applicants will need to achieve A-level standard from January

The Home Office has announced tougher English language requirements that will require immigrants to the UK to achieve an A-level standard in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The new rules will come into effect from January 8 2026 and initially apply to Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual, and Scale-up visas, according to a statement to the House of Commons on Tuesday.

More than 40,000 workers were issued UK visas through these routes in the year to the end of June 2025, official figures show.
