Before Donald Trump had completed a year of his first presidential term, New Jersey voters rejected his Republican party, electing Democrat Phil Murphy as their next governor by a 15-point margin.

Eight years on, Trump’s national approval ratings are slipping again — but it is New Jersey’s Democrats who are suddenly worrying.

With less than a month to go until November’s polling day, their gubernatorial candidate, Mikie Sherrill, is in a neck-and-neck race against Jack Ciattarelli, a former Republican state lawmaker who has made the cost of living — and his allegiance to the president — key themes of his campaign.
