Amazon has reached a $2.5bn settlement in a case brought by the US Federal Trade Commission, two days after the trial began, agreeing to pay the largest civil penalty for a violation of the regulator’s rules.
The consumer protection and competition agency on Thursday said Amazon agreed to pay $1bn in civil penalties and $1.5bn in compensation to consumers.
The FTC had alleged Amazon duped customers into signing up for its Prime service without their consent and had been “sabotaging” efforts to undo their subscriptions.
