Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ruled out holding negotiations with the US over Tehran’s nuclear programme, saying that caving to the Trump administration’s demands would signal “surrender” and would “disgrace” the Islamic republic.
“Over these past decades, they wanted Iran to give up [its nuclear programme] under pressure. But we have not surrendered and never will,” he said in a speech broadcast on state television.
The defiant comments by Khamenei — who has the final say on all major foreign and domestic decisions — comes days ahead of a deadline when international sanctions are expected to be reimposed on Iran, raising the stakes in the republic’s long-running stand-off with the west over its nuclear activities.
