Apple launches skinny iPhone as it holds prices despite tariff costs

Tech group tries to lure customers to upgrade devices as it suffers from US trade war and slow progress on AI

Apple introduced a new slimline iPhone Air on Tuesday, the biggest change to the look of its flagship smartphones in years, as the tech giant seeks to build momentum around its products after suffering from trade disruption and artificial intelligence setbacks.

Chief executive Tim Cook described the iPhone Air, which is 5.6mm thick, features a single camera on the back and is packed with Apple’s own custom chips, as the “biggest leap ever for iPhone”.

The creation of a thinner version of the smartphone — which still accounts for about half of the company’s nearly $400bn in annual revenue — follows the introduction of slim, low-cost “Air” models for the MacBook and iPad years ago.
