Space to Grow — the privatisation of the solar system

A useful primer explains how cosmic exploration has been commercialised and explores the challenges in policing this new wild west

Like space itself, the literature about space is seemingly never-ending, reaching from the science to the excitement of exploration to the study of the human condition. The most recent novel to win the Booker Prize, Samantha Harvey’s Orbital, is set on the International Space Station. 

Now space is being written about as an economic phenomenon. Space to Grow is a useful primer that explains what is happening in the space economy. The problem of space debris, for instance, exemplifies the tragedy of the commons. A scarce but unpriced resource — near-space — is in jeopardy as more satellites increase the risk of collisions, generating debris that would make some orbits unusable.
