Consumer companies criticised the latest draft of a UN treaty to tackle plastic pollution for not going far enough, as the final stages of international negotiations in Geneva were in disarray after being blocked by petrochemical producers.
The final round of negotiations in Geneva was suspended late on Thursday night pending the presentation of a new draft of the treaty on Friday.
The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, which represents 200 companies including Walmart, Tetra Pak and Unilever, said on Thursday that the draft offered neither the regulatory certainty nor global obligations required to tackle the plastic waste problem. The talks, scheduled to conclude on Thursday, were extended into another day.
