Decades after other countries around the world compensated victims of the contaminated blood scandal, the UK on Tuesday unveiled a multibillion-pound compensation package for families who have waited more than half a century for justice.

The announcement follows the conclusion of a six-year public inquiry into one of the worst treatment disasters in NHS history, where more than 30,000 people were infected with HIV and hepatitis C after being given contaminated blood products.
