West condemns Vladimir Putin’s re-election as violating ‘civil and political rights’

UK and EU denounce presidential vote in Russia as bloc readies sanctions over death of Alexei Navalny

Western nations have condemned Russia’s presidential election as violating “civil and political rights”, as the EU moved to impose new sanctions on Moscow in response to the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

This weekend’s vote, in which Vladimir Putin won a new six-year term in the Kremlin, “took place in a highly restricted environment”, the EU said in a statement on Monday.

“Russian authorities have continued to increase the systematic internal repression . . . which has resulted in an alarming increase of violations of civil and political rights,” it added.
