The proportion of students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland awarded top GCSE grades has fallen sharply, as examination boards returned results to pre-pandemic standards after three years of record grade inflation.
About 22 per cent of GCSEs — national exams taken by 16-year-olds — were at a grade seven or above this year, equivalent to an A-A* in the old system, according to results released on Thursday by the Joint Council for Qualifications.
This represented a sharp fall from last year, when the proportion of pupils achieving top grades stood at 26.3 per cent after formal exams returned.
