African leaders begin peace mission to Ukraine and Russia

Delegation will stress impact of war on global food prices in separate meetings with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin

Cyril Ramaphosa recently vowed that Africa would never again be a “pawn” between east and west, recalling the proxy conflicts on the continent of the cold war era.

South Africa’s president is now looking to prevent a rerun of history by joining an ambitious delegation of the continent’s leaders seeking to mediate a European peace deal and end Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The group, which also includes leaders from Egypt, the Republic of Congo, Senegal, Zambia, Uganda and Comoros, will hold talks on Friday with Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy before travelling to Russia to meet with Vladimir Putin.
