Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s pro-EU party has outstripped its main Russia-leaning rival to win more than 50 per cent of the vote in a parliamentary election seen as pivotal for the country’s future course.
Sandu’s ruling Action and Solidarity party (PAS) outperformed pre-election forecasts and with more than 98 per cent of the votes counted by Monday morning was on track to secure 55 seats in the 101-seat legislature, the majority it needed to continue pursuing its goal of EU accession.
The result will come as a relief to Brussels, which has welcomed Moldova’s EU bid and pledged more than €1.8bn in economic support for the small eastern European country, which has been hit hard by the effects of Russia’s war against neighbouring Ukraine.
