Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set for crunch talks on Gaza with Donald Trump on Monday in Washington, with the US promoting a new plan that could bring nearly two years of war to an end.
Netanyahu will meet the US president at the White House for the fourth time since Trump returned to power in January — more than any other world leader — yet Israeli officials are preparing for a potentially fraught exchange over the Gaza war.
In New York last week for UN meetings, Trump presented a new 21-point plan to end the war to Arab and Muslim leaders that called for a permanent ceasefire, the release of all remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas and the deployment of an international stabilisation force for the besieged strip. An international supervisory body would oversee a Palestinian committee that would govern the territory during a transitionary period.
